2018 – Another Record Year for Unit Oskarshamn 3

Pressrelease Monday, January 07, 2019

2018 turned out to be the best production year so far for unit Oskarshamn 3 (O3). The other units scheduled for dismantling and demolition, Oskarshamn 1 and 2, also reached historical milestones when the final spent fuel cask left unit O1 and the cutting of the internals at unit O2 was initiated.

On Wednesday 19 December, unit O3 beat the previous production record from 2016, and at the end of 2018 the annual production amounted to 11.1 billion kilowatt hours, of which 10.6 billion kWh consisted of climate efficient electricity delivered to customers, which is also a new record.

– I am extremely proud of our employees who conduct their work in a safe and efficient manner which means that we are able to deliver climate efficient and safe base load power at maximum power, says Mats Ekblad, Production Manager at unit O3.

2018 was also a year that contained historical milestones for the units that have been permanently shut down, Oskarshamn 1 and 2. In December, the final spent fuel cask from unit Oskarshamn 1 was transported off the site, leaving the unit completely cleared of fuel. This was an important milestone, since this is also one of the conditions of being able to continue the dismantling and demolition process.

Unit Oskarshamn 2 also reached a historical milestone in the unit's history when the cutting of the internals was initiated.

2018 was not only a record year for OKG, the Swedish nuclear power electricity generation was generally good in 2018. The preliminary numbers provided by Swedenergy indicate that nuclear power was by large the greatest source of electricity generation in the country in 2018.
