OKG

Milestone Reached within the Decommissioning Work

Pressrelease Tuesday, January 03, 2017

On 19 December 2016, the Managing Director of OKG, Johan Dasht, signed the first contract concerning the decommissioning of unit Oskarshamn 1 (O1) and unit Oskarshamn 2 (O2) with General Electric Hitachi (GE-H), and a milestone within the decommissioning work is thus reached.

Extensive activities were initiated at OKG this past spring in order to enable the reactor vessel internals segmentation, or cutting, at units O1 and O2. This is a significant part of the technical and financial conditions of running a continuously safe and cost-efficient decommissioning of O1 and O2.

During the autumn of 2016, the work performed has principally concerned tender evaluation and negotiations with various contractors. At the end of 2016, the Board of Directors at OKG reached the final decisions and negotiations were closed.

– One condition required in order for unit Oskarshamn 3 to be able to produce climate efficient electricity until the year of 2045, is that we perform the decommissioning activities at units O1 and O2 in a safe and cost-efficient manner. One of the milestones of this work has now been reached with the signing of this contract and I would like to express my thanks to everyone involved for their excellent work in which we have managed to keep the set deadline despite the stretched time schedule, MD Johan Dasht says.

The project is now entering the next phase which will be focused on the preparations for the implementation at unit O2, scheduled to start in January 2018. The segmentation at unit O1 is scheduled to take place in 2019 and the project is estimated to be entirely completed by the beginning of 2020.

The Managing Director of OKG, Johan Dasht, and Fredrik Vitabäck, Country Sales Executive, Northern Europe, at GE-H, shake hands after signing the first contract for the decommissioning of units Oskarshamn 1 (O1) and Oskarshamn 2 (O2).
