Dismantling and demolition
OKG takes responsibility for the whole life cycle. We clean up after ourselves.
Our mission includes the responsible decommissioning of decommissioned facilities - we clean up after ourselves. OKG thus takes responsibility for the entire nuclear lifecycle - in addition to producing safe and competitive electricity with nuclear power, it also includes carrying out a safe and cost-effective decommissioning of plants that are taken out of operation.
In 2015, OKG's then majority owner decided to close Oskarshamn 1 (O1) and Oskarshamn 2 (O2) early. The decision meant that O2, which at the time of the decision was in the middle of a modernization project, would not restart and that O1 would be taken out of operation by mid-2017. O2 was defueled in December 2017 and in spring 2018 work started on cutting the internal parts of the reactor vessel. In parallel, O1 was defueled and work on cutting parts continued in 2019. Large-scale dismantling and demolition then began in 2020.
